Isla Mujeres sits eight kilometres across the Bahía de Mujeres from Cancun's hotel zone, a limestone sliver where the Caribbean Sea meets the Gulf of Mexico in water so clear that visibility can reach thirty metres.
The island's name dates to 1517, when Spanish explorer Francisco Hernández de Córdoba found clay figurines of Ixchel, the Maya goddess of fertility, scattered along the southern cliffs. For centuries the island served as a base for pirates, then a fishing outpost, and finally a sleepy refuge from the mainland's resort sprawl. Today its protected reefs and shallow lagoons anchor the Parque Nacional Costa Occidental de Isla Mujeres, Punta Cancún y Punta Nizuc, a marine reserve established in 1996 that safeguards over 8,500 hectares of coral, seagrass, and mangrove.
Private boat tour Cancun operators depart from Punta Sam Ferry Terminal and the marina district along Boulevard Kukulcán, carrying groups to the island's northern beaches, Playa Norte's powder-sand crescent, and the submerged sculpture garden known as the Museo Subacuático de Arte. Monohull yachts, particularly the forty-six-foot flybridge models, deliver faster transit times and elevated helm stations with three-hundred-sixty-degree sightlines. Departure windows cluster between eight and ten in the morning to exploit the offshore breeze that typically picks up after noon, when the sea state shifts and afternoon squalls build over the Yucatán Channel. Most private charters include snorkel gear, reef-safe sunscreen, and the mandatory twenty-dollar dock and National Marine Park fee, collected per passenger to fund buoy maintenance and patrol operations within the reserve.
